Arizona and Restraining Orders for a Boyfriend - Ask RJ

Ask RJ: Can my parents put a restraining order on my boyfriend without my consent?

The Question:

Can my parents put a restraining order on my boyfriend without my consent if he has never harassed me or them? I am 17 and my boyfriend is turning 19. he has never been anything but supportive but my parents hate him because he told the police about abuse in the family. can they legally put a restraining order on him without my consent? Arizona laws please if you can.

RJ Says:

They could seek a restraining order on their OWN behalf if they believe he has harassed them or committed an act of domestic violence against them.  They cannot do so on YOUR behalf unless they can allege that he has YOU or committed an act of domestic violence against YOU. If they filed something, he is permitted to request a hearing, and you are permitted to testify on his behalf.
